The Truxel Bridge Coalition is a grassroots community coalition supporting the successful planning, approval, and construction of the Truxel Bridge over the Lower American River.
The Coalition brings together residents, businesses, community organizations, and civic leaders who believe the bridge can create better connections between South Natomas, Gardenland, the River District, and surrounding Sacramento neighborhoods.
Why the Bridge Matters
The Truxel Bridge is anticipated to help:
- Improve connections between Sacramento neighborhoods
- Provide an efficient crossing of the American River
- Improve access to jobs, schools, services, and recreation
- Support walking, bicycling, transit, and automobile travel
- Strengthen connections to the American River Parkway
- Improve transportation resilience and emergency response times
Where the Project Stands
The Truxel Bridge has been studied by the City of Sacramento for more than a decade.
In 2013, the Sacramento City Council adopted the Truxel Road alignment as the preferred location for a new multimodal crossing of the Lower American River after the City evaluated eight potential crossing locations.
The City subsequently completed a Concept and Feasibility Study examining how the bridge could be designed. On February 18, 2025, the Sacramento City Council accepted that study and adopted a preferred alternative that separated cars, light rail, bicyclists, and pedestrians in exclusive right-of-way to guide the future design, engineering, and analysis of the project.
What’s next?
The project still has significant work ahead including environmental clearance, detailed design, permitting, funding, and additional approvals. The City anticipates that the project will continue through the environmental review and regulatory processes before construction can begin.
Protecting the American River
Building a bridge across the Lower American River comes with important environmental responsibilities.
The Coalition supports responsible planning and construction that:
- Minimizes impacts to trees and natural habitat
- Protects fish and wildlife
- Respects the American River Parkway
- Uses thoughtful construction methods
- Honors the cultural resources of the original inhabitants of the project area
- Incorporates appropriate environmental mitigation
Sacramento can improve transportation connections while being a responsible steward of the Lower American River and the American River Parkway.
