The River District is bringing together community leaders, residents, businesses, and stakeholders to support one of Sacramento’s most significant transportation initiatives: the proposed Truxel Bridge over the Lower American River. To help guide advocacy efforts and community engagement, the River District has established a Truxel Bridge Advocacy Task Force led by consultant Fedolia “Sparky” Harris, formerly with the City of Sacramento.

The Truxel Bridge Coalition is focused on advancing a project that would strengthen connections between South Natomas, Gardenland, the River District, and surrounding Sacramento neighborhoods. Supporters believe the bridge has the potential to improve access to jobs, schools, services, recreation, and transit options while enhancing transportation resilience and emergency response capabilities.

The bridge has been under study by the City of Sacramento for more than a decade. In February 2025, the Sacramento City Council accepted a Concept and Feasibility Study and adopted a preferred alternative that would accommodate automobiles, light rail, bicyclists, and pedestrians in separate rights-of-way, helping guide the project’s future design and environmental review process.

Under Harris’s leadership, the Task Force will help foster community dialogue around the project and encourage public participation as planning continues. The Coalition emphasizes the importance of balancing improved connectivity with responsible environmental stewardship, including protecting habitat, respecting the American River Parkway, and incorporating appropriate mitigation measures.

As the project moves through environmental review, permitting, and future funding discussions, the River District’s Truxel Bridge Advocacy Task Force aims to ensure community voices remain part of the conversation while advancing a vision of better-connected neighborhoods and expanded opportunity throughout Sacramento.
